Happy National Girls & Women In Sports Day! In honor of this momentous occasion, I’m gonna come out and say something in I’ve been holding in for 4 long years ... I love the Summer Olympics... I mean, a lot.

It's the kind of love where I spend an entire month picturing myself in a shiny track suit standing on a podium, waiving a bouquet of flowers in front of an American flag. Track & field, cycling, the weird sports like fencing and badminton, swimming, gymnastics… ooh, don’t get me started on the gymnastics. Men’s, Women’s, I love it all.

But there is one sport that I find far more compelling than the rest. It’s a sport you’ll rarely find airing during the coveted 8pm time slot. The bathing beauties of the Synchronized Swimming team are always tucked somewhere in the middle of the day between the Today Show and Days of Our Lives... But not anymore.

Look what I found!

Filmmaker Cheryl Furjanic opens a window in to a sport that has been overlooked by the mainstream for far too long. It’s one of two Olympic events that is exclusive to female athletes, and is often dismissed in conversations regarding the level of athleticism and rigorous training that is required to become an Olympian. Sync Or Swim takes you beneath the choreography and sparkly outfits, and in to the lives of these athletes who spend hundreds of grueling hours in and out of the water, training to make it all look so effortless.

Her first feature documentary – Sync or Swim (2008) – received numerous awards, including a Billie Award for Journalism from the Women’s Sports Foundation, and is now available on DVD and iTunes. Her short documentary and fiction films, which range in length from 30 seconds to 13 minutes, have screened at 100+ festivals worldwide and on television. Cheryl holds a BFA in Film & Television Production from NYU’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts and a Masters degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. When she’s not making films, Cheryl researches audience relationships and fandom in fiction television.

This Month: Vivian Maier @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

I was introduced to Vivian Maier's photography a few years ago while flipping through a discarded magazine on a plane. It all felt very appropriate. Maier was not a artist. She worked as a nanny for most the 50's and 60's, taking moments to snap photos of the various worlds she lived in. The majority of her work was never published, rather, it was found in a discarded shoe box in a Chicago thrift store.

The brilliance of her work is not only in the work itself, but in it's timing. She represents the dawn of the urban photo journalism era, while also participating as the subject. She was a normal woman, just like us. We share the moments we capture with our Instagrams, and Twitpics, she did the same with her Kodak Rolleiflex and makeshift dark room. She was documenting the rapidly changing world around her long before we did it with our uploads and tagged photos. I see my friends post dozens of staged 'candids' every day, and I always think of Vivian.

You have to check out her work, but perhaps more importantly, you have to learn her story. In fact, you may already know it. Meet Vivian Maier.

7th Annual Focus On Female Directors Film Festival

Happy New Year Everyone!

Let's ring in the New Year short film style! The Egyptian Theater is hosting a short film festival called the 7th Annual Focus On Female Directors this Thursday, Jan. 5th at 7:30pm.

This is the first year that I’ve found out about this event in advance, so I’m excited to attend. Many of this year's filmmakers are new to me, which I love, however, there is one contributor who’s work I celebrate as often as possible. Perhaps you've heard of Penelope Spheeris, Director of one the most celebrated films of our time. Ms. Spheeris will not only be showing her 1998 short film "No Use Walkin' When You Can Stroll", but she will also be hosting a post-screening discussion. (Awesome...)

THIS WEEKEND: Forbiden Fasion @ The Bootleg Theater

Hi Everyone,

This weekend, The Bootleg Theater is hosting a 3 part runway show and silent auction featuring designs from some of the uppn'comers from the LA art scene. Forbidden Fashion @ The Bootleg Theater brings the semi-punk, mostly DIY spirit of the venue itself to the runway. All of the fashions we'll see walking stealthely down the isle are comprised of stolen, found and recycleable materials. Badass. The show is curated by costume designer Ann Closs-Farley.

I haven't been yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how this translates in to a moving performance, err.. fashion show. Let's check it out. Let me know what you think!!

TODAY: SlutWalk LA

"We live in a world where we're taught 'Don't get raped' instead of 'Don't rape!'.." Anonymous

In case you haven't heard of "SlutWalk" here's a little backstory...

After several reported rapes on the campus of York University in Toronto, Officer Michael Sanguuinetti told a group of young women that they should avoid "dressing like sluts" to prevent further incidents.

And thus was born.. SlutWalk! Activists Heather Jarvis and Sonya Barntet organized a rally of "Sluts" to publicly expose the idea that women who are in control of their own sexuality should not be targets of physical or social violence.

These rallies have been popping up all over Canada and the US, with tens of thousands of women showing up to support the cause.

The movement is not, however, without protest from some of it's own initial supporters. The use of the word "Slut" has been a highly controversial topic within the Feminist community. Some argue that the word or label inherently condones both women and men to behave irresponsibly. Rather than erasing the stigma of the "Slut" they are embracing it, and thus reducing the idea that the way a woman carries herself comes down to her behavior in the bedroom. Another school of thought blames the movement for making promiscuity seem "cool" and "political".

Whether you find Slutdom empowering or degrading, dangerous or powerful, you should at leas check out the SlutWalk that is happening in LA today. Look at what they're saying, and form your own opinion. Then, share that opinion - and lets open up a real place where we can talk about rape and victimization of sexualized women.

THIS WEEK: "Orgasm, Inc." A doc by Liz Canner

It's not news that the medical industry gets off on telling women that our bodies are functioning incorrectly, and that we should be pumping pharmaceuticals straight to our lady parts. So when I heard that Liz Canner's new documentary "Orgasm, Inc." is going to be playing at the Sunset 5 this week, I got very excited. (#feministnerd)

It seems that "83%" of us are victims of the silent disease called SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION!! Yes ladies, the reason you're not reaching The Big O is because there is something wrong with your body. You'll need to pay top dollar to be diagnosed and you'll also be ponying up for the prescription to cure you of this awful affliction.

2nd Annual WAM! Women, Action & the Media Conference

Hello Femministas!

It's been way too long since the last time we ventured in to the wide world of feminist media together, so I want to start off by saying.... I promise I'll make it up to you.

Mark your calendars, because this month we celebrate the 2nd Annual WAM! It Yourself Los Angeles conference, and with it, the 1 year anniversary of LAFemmedia!

One year ago this weekend, I wondered in to a little seminar being led by one my favorite online feminist bloggers, Feminist Fatale, and my eyes were opened to the beauty of the on-line feminist community. Speakers such as Anita Sarkeesian (Feminist Frequency) and Melanie Klein turned me to on to the idea of starting my own forum to discuss feminist media events - or lack thereof - in my beloved Los Angeles.

Throughout all of the discussions, I was most moved by the A in WAM!. Action. Actively participating in the media empowers us all to chose what messages drive the tone of our social culture. I am proud to be a part of that conversation, and I urge you to stop by and support other on-line feminist activists.

The WAM! It Yourself Los Angeles 2011 Conference is happening this Friday, March 25th and Saturday, March 26 at Santa Monica College in Santa Monica.

TONIGHT: Me and TED

For me, this week can be summed up in 2 word: Life Lessons. It's been a week of personal advances, and professional set backs. But I get it, it happens. Sometimes the work/life combo doesn't quite pan out the way we hope, but we learn and keep on going. In the end, all this determination and self-reflective brain activity is freakin' exhausting.

So Feministas, I do not have an event for you this weekend because frankly, I don't wanna leave my house. BUT, I do have something to enjoy while deeply buried in the folds of my couch.

Does everyone here know about TED? It's an organization that hosts live conferences, performances and talks by the world's leaders in innovative thought. If you can name a subject, genre, or idea, TED has a video of someone talking about it. It's awesome.

A woman from CareerOverview.com brought this to my attention, and I thought it would be perfect for this brain-cloudy weekend.

Netflix Goes Feminist!! (Sort of)

Hello Everyone,

This week I don't have an event for you per se (blame the venues), but I do have an awesome find that will bring feminist media in to our lives every darn day! Do all of you know about FemaleDirectors.com? Well, you should.

Check this out, it's a link to all of the female directed films and TV shows that are currently featured on netflix. The rad women (and possibly men) at FemaleDirectors.com have recently showcased a study representing that the number of female directed movies on Netflix has almost doubled! From less than 1% to almost 2%. Not exactly stellar numbers.

(To clarify, this does not represent any sort of bias on the part of the folks at Netflix. Rather, it represents the low number of female film makers who are being supported by the movie making machines. *See comment below*)

The good news is that we now have a tool that will direct us to the source of female directed media. The more we click, the more we demand a variety in the types of films we want to watch. Let Netflix know that we love what they do - we just want to see ourselves represented appropriately.

I'm going to use this tool to order at least TWO female directed fims/TV shows from Netflix in each cycle, in hopes of showing the number crunchers that we demand more.

Hello Feministas, and Happy New Year!!

I hope you all had a lovely holiday season, enjoying the snow/ rain/ multiple screenings of Black Swan.. etc.

I'm excited to kick off the new year with such a positive event. The Hammer Museum will be screening the documentary "A Small Act", Produced and Directed by Jennifer Arnold, and Produced by Patti Lee.

One of my focuses for the new year is to make positive contributions to my surroundings, therefore creating positive change in the lives around me. This is the perfect way to begin, and this film is the perfect introduction to a year of positive ripple effects.

You may have already heard about "A Small Act", it's gotten so much great buzz and has been awarded the Elle/ Garnier Film Independent Directing Fellowship, and the Women In Film National Geographic All Roads Film Program award. I can't wait to see it, and I'm bringing tissues. Here's a little synopsis.

"A Small Act explores the ripple effect a single action can create. This award winning documentary tells the story of Chris Mburu, a young man from Kenya, and his astonishing journey from an impoverished village to becoming a Harvard Law School graduate and a human rights lawyer for the United Nations. Eventually Mburu traces the woman who sponsored his early education for 50 cents a day, and finds she is a Holocaust survivor, who is amazed to discover that her small act of generosity has led to educating a man who would then dedicate his life to fighting crimes against humanity." - Hammer Museum

Writer/ Director/ Producer Jennifer Arnold and Producer/DP Patti Lee will be there for a Q&A following the screening.

Tomorrow night, first time Author Patti Hawn is going to be signing copies of her new book "Good Girls Don't: A Memoir by Patti Hawn" at Pages: A Bookstore in Manhattan Beach.

I think this one is especially cool. I share a mutual friend with the author and have heard only rave reviews of her as a woman, and a friend. I can't wait to see what she brings as an Authoress.

This Week: Regina Spektor - Live In London

Hello Feministas!

This is great news, Downtown Indipendent is having a 'One Night Only' Showing of Regina Spektor's concert film "Live In London" tomorrow night! I didn't even know Regina Spektor had a concert film, which makes it especially bad ass.

If you don't know Regina Spektor's music, check it out for sure. She's great. Think Tori Amos, but with comprehensible lyrics. (No offense, T.)

This is her latest video for "Eet". So good......

The film is directed by music video director, and frequent Regina collaborator, Adria Petty. Check out her website. I'm officially obsessed with her work. (Take a look at the trailer for her Paris Hilton doc. Hot. )

Hi Everyone,

Artist Zoe Crosher is opening her exhibit "For Ur Eyes Only: The Unveiling of Michelle DuBois" at the Charlie James Gallery over in the East Side, Chinatown area.

If you haven't heard the history of Michelle duBois (as I hadn't) you must definitely check out Zoe's website. The work is essentially an interpretation of the prolific artifacts of duBois' life. Through much of the 1970's Michelle duBois (alias) chronicled her life as a stewardess, Pacific Rim sex worker and world traveler through many mediums. Until one day, she stopped... That is where Zoe's work comes in.

Here's a little info about Zoe, and her Michelle DuBois work.

"The Unveiling of Michelle duBois opens with the final published photographs in the archive, to which the artist refers as “the last four days and nights in Tokyo.” The West Coast was Oklahoma-native duBois’ last American port of call before setting off for Asia. So it is perhaps fitting that Chung King Road’s Hollywood-ized take on Chinese culture should be the place to unveil duBois’ Oriental escapism. Crosher has fixed in on duBois’ transient obsessions, making pictures of pictures - of obfuscated faces, of repeated shadows in dark black &white doorways, of arched backs, of backs of backs of photographs and backs of necks, of notes taken and rewritten, scanned and scratched, kept and held and returned - all archives within archives through which we are momentarily granted access into one woman’s fantastical worldview and performed sexuality, framed and reframed by a medium disappearing before our eyes." - Charlie James Gallery Website

I'll spare you the pseudo-informative blurb about how Ms. Phair's universally acclaimed album "Exile In Guyville" (1993) helped guide a generation of snarky teenage girls toward becoming a culture of snarky thirtysomething women. I know a lot of us were pissed when she left Matador put out those two weird albums with Capitol. But frankly guys, I don't give a damn. I love the hell out of her, and "Polyester Bride" will be one of my favorite songs till the day I die.

THIS FRIDAY: "Stepping On A Few Toes" by Jasmynne Shaye

Hey Folks!
There's some good sh*t going on toward the end of the week! First up, Friday the 24th is the opening night of "Stepping On A Few Toes" by Jasmynne Shaye at the NoHo Stages in the NoHo Arts District.

I don't know much about Jasmynne, but her one woman show "Stepping On A Few Toes" has been getting rave reviews, and has garnered many comparisons to last year's film "Precious". I'm not one to praise comparisons, per se, but I am a fan of any woman with the balls to stand half naked on a stage and tell her story. Here's some info about the show....

"In her involving one-woman show, writer/performer Jasmynne Shaye describes growing up as the emotionally and sexually abused child of a single mother, and of her struggle to vanquish the demons bred of a lonely and loveless childhood." - LA Weekly

Bring tissues.

"Shaye’s harrowing narrative of despair is punctuated by dance pieces, which enable her to lose herself. Dance, having been her solace throughout childhood and beyond, is equally a character in her show, as are the 12 different friends and family members she portrays. They enable Shaye to portray through movement and emotion what she might be unable to get across in the book of the play." - LA Theater Review

Ms. Shaye will be hosting a Q&A after this performance. There will also be a wine and cheese event and apparently a giveaway. What that could be, I have no idea.. But free wine!

Here's a last minute thing if you're looking for something to do tonight. Filmmaker Clara Alcott's short film "Kick" will be showing tonight at the Echo Park Film Center. (Love them!)

"A science fiction melodrama with a feminine kick, the film deals with two women who, despite being strangers, have the same therapist, a mutual anxiety about technology, and a psychic connection. Kick is inspired by the Hollywood melodramas of Douglas Sirk and features a vibrant color palette in the style of 1950s Technicolor films. Marc Riordan composed the contemporary electronic score and Todd Carter (of the laptop group TV Pow!) provided the experimental sound design. The screening of Kick will be preceded by a series of short works reflecting the film's themes, including the short film FANGagra by Pizza and Beer Flicks' Carolyn Morse and Alex Warth, also on the program are works by Lilli Carré, Eric Wareheim & Yasmine Kittles, The Pretty Things, Sarah Hamblin, Chris Hefner & Yony Leyser."

I'm sorry it's been a few weeks since our last update. We've been soaking up the last remnants of "summer" over by the beach. It's been so chilly, I'm not sure I went in the water once this year! Lame.

Isn't she beautiful, and smart!! I might be slightly biased, seeing as she's been one of my best friends since the late 90's. She stole my heart the moment we met, while making fun of people at a lame dorm party at NYU. Not only is she a wonderful editor, but she rules in pretty much every other capacity.

REVIEW Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child, A Film By Tamra Davis

When I think of the films of Tamra Davis, a smile comes to my face. I think of the giggly afternoons spent with my college roommates watching such treasures as "Billy Madison" and "Half Baked" while ingesting whatever substance struck our fancy. I was impressed that these off-beat, half-wit male centric movies actually came from the mind of a woman. I found something delightfully subversive about that. These were characters that we all knew. They were the terribly lovable yet completely idiotic man/boy friends who were aimlessly wondering the world anxiously awaiting the next "nudie magazine day". My friends and I loved these light hearted films for all their fluff and they've certainly become a part of our pop-culture history. Tamra Davis... aahhhhh...

Not long ago I found out that Ms. Davis was soon to release a documentary. It seemed a bit out of character, but being a fan, I had faith. Then I found out what the documentary was about: Jean-Michel Basquiat. O.M.G. If you're familiar with Basquiat's work, chances are you're obsessed with it. The idea of Tamra Davis making a film about his life seemed quite unusual and rather counterproductive at first glance. After all, Basquiat is one of the most iconic and influential artists of the modern art movement. His work is incredibly cerebral and spans the scope of subject matter from poverty, to racism, to fame, and far beyond. "Billy Madison" was a movie about a guy who couldn't spell the word 'couch'. I wasn't seeing the correlation.

As I said, though, I kept my faith fully intact, and went down to the Landmark Nuart Theater in Santa Monica for a screening of "Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child", by Tamra Davis. Needless to say, I was blown away. At the center of the film is a very raw, very jagged interview with Jean-Michel taken about a year before his death in 1986. Tamra is operating the camera, while her friend Becky asks the questions. She knew him!! Tamra Davis KNEW Jean-Michel Basquiat. Woah. The film starts off with a musical collage featuring some of Jean-Michel's work, inter-cut with footage of him painting. Rare images and reproductions of his artwork run a steady line throughout the film, and provide the foundation for the story that unfolds.

Many of the people who were important to Jean-Michel's work, and the art world at large are interviewed in the film. Heavy hitters such as Julian Schnabel, Larry Gagosian, Bruno Bischofberger, Fab 5 Freddy (yes!), and Rene Ricard all make an appearance. (Don't worry, I had to look most of them up too.) Each one of them gives an incredibly honest and personal account of their relationship with Jean-Michel. However, the most heart felt and perhaps honest interview is that of Suzanne Mallouk, Jean-Michel's long time lover, and most ardent supporter.

While the men that are interviewed paint a very accurate picture of what his work represented, and what his presence meant, Suzanne is able to provide the best portrait of who he was, not only as an artist, but as a man. She recounts an ill-fated attempt to make him get a job to help pay the rent early in their relationship, only to end up fully supporting both him, and his art habit. Her anecdotes are the most poignant, and most defining moments in the film. There have been endless books, articles, news stories, etc. written about Basquiat's artistic influence or infamous life; Written by art critics, or other men of note. But hearing hearing his stories from someone who truly loved him is beautiful.

Throughout the film, Davis touches on all of the things we "know" about Jean-Michel's iconic life. She chronicles the rise and fall of his relationship with Andy Warhol, as well as his decent in to a conscious drug addiction. She notes all of the hype that has entered him in to the history books of the Lower Manhattan scene in the early 1980's. But ultimately, it's her heart as a friend that really jumps off the screen. It's quite obvious that this film is an homage to someone who she loved very dearly, and has been delicately put together to honor his memory, and not to cash in on his work, as so many of his 'friends' were quick to do.

As I left the theater, I thought back to my initial reaction upon hearing that Tamra Davis was set to release the seminal Jean-Michel Basquiat documentary, and it made perfect sense. This is a portrait of an man who was lovable, and mild mannered, sometimes idiotic, but ultimately brilliant. A man wondering the world, looking for his inspiration and the next step toward infamy. This is the kind of story Tamra Davis tells best.

Thank you, Tamra. From all of Basquiat's fan's who were tired of hearing "white people drinking white wine" pontificating on the meaning of his work and the devastation of his downfall. Thank you for painting this picture of a whole human being and for making us a part of it!

THIS WEEKEND: "Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child" By Tamra Davis

Hi Everyone,

This one is really exciting! So, tonight we're headed down to the Landmark Nuart Theater in Santa Monica to see the new feature doc "Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child". Directed by none other than Tamra Davis; the mastermind behind such classics as "Billy Madison", "CB4", Britney Spears' film "Crossroads", and the "Mmmm Bop" video.

You might be wondering what such a light hearted filmmaker could say about one of our generation's most important and prolific artists. But don't worry, she's legit, a true artist herself. (We all saw "Billy Madison", it could only come from an artist's heart.) It seems that Ms. Davis was a good friend of Jean-Michel, and has been holding on to over a half hour of interview footage she took of him in the mid 80's. After more than 25 years of sitting on this material, Tamra has made a documentary about his life and work.

I am a Basquiat fan to the core, and I was enthralled with "Downtown 81" when I saw it in the early 90's. Discovering his unique look was a huge stepping stone in my own creative endeavours, and I'm thrilled that someone has made a real documentary about him. I also love Julian Schnabel's film "Basquiat" released in 1996, however it reads more of an interpretation of Jean-Michel than a true depiction of his character.

I'm stoked to see this film, and I love Tamra's work, eclectic though it may be. I mean, she's married to a Beastie Boy for crying out loud. Street cred.

TOMORROW: 3rd Annual Philomenian - The Works of Philomene Long

Hello Feministas,
So, do you all know about the poet Philomene Long? I'm just learning about her myself, and let me tell you, her work is brilliant.

To celebrate the anniversary of her birth and death, Beyond Baroque Literary/ Arts Center is hosting the "3rd Annual Philomenian". A reading of Long's poetry and prose by local poets and friends of the writer. (Details below)

Philomene, the Poet Laureate of Venice, was an artistic institution in the Venice Beach beatnik scene in the late 60's, and a community activist until her death in 2007. Known as the "Queen of Bohemia", Philomene wrote poetry, prose, and made films about her experience in Venice Beach as she watched it go from a violent yet artistic haven to a gentrified hipster scene.

I'm just beginning to delve in to her poetry, but so far I'm delighted. I'm new to the west side of this gorgeous city, and I find myself constantly learning the depth of the history over here. Philomene is definitely a huge part of the artistic patchwork in Venice, and I'm looking forward to this event.

THIS WEEKEND: How Women Made The West

Hello All,

This weekend I'm going to check out an exhibit at The Autry Museum in Griffith Park - "How Women Made The West". I'm generally pretty hesitant about exhibits that seem like arts and crafts displays, but I'm hoping the Autry can go a little deeper. I've been to several of their exhibits, and have been pleased to see them paint a rather diverse picture of How The West Was... Something. Hopefully this exhibit will be intellectually stimulating - and not make me wanna take up crocheting again.

Here's a little blurb from the fine folks at the Autry Museum:
"From ancient pueblos to modern suburbs, women have shaped the Western landscape through choices about how to sustain home, family, and community. Home Lands: How Women Made the West brings together women's history, Western history, and environmental history to show how women have been at the heart of the Western enterprise across cultures and over time. Historical artifacts, art, photographs, and biographies of individual women will lead visitors through three distinctive Western environments created and inhabited by women."

I think this sounds interesting. Worth checking out.

REVIEW The Kids Are Alright

In an attempt to beat the glorious heat last week, I ducked in to the cool air conditioned walls of The Archlight theater in Hollywood to catch an afternoon showing of Lisa Cholodenko's new High Femme film, "The Kids Are Alright".

Los Angelinas, this movie is so f*cking good. It is so refreshing to see a film written and directed by a woman (feminist, lesbian) about a family helmed by women (feminist, lesbians) starring women (feminists, tbd ;). The themes in this movie - family, love, sex, growing up - are highlighted by some of the best performances I've seen in a while.

Annette Bening (Nic) and Julianne Moore (Jules) play partners who have been together for going on 20 years. They've raised two teenage children, played spot-on by Mia Wasikowska (Joni) and Josh Hutcherson (Laser). When Joni turns 18, she and Laser make the decision to track down and contact the sperm donor that their mothers used to fertilize their family.

Enter the salacious Mark Ruffalo (Paul). He wears leather, rides a bike, owns an organic restaurant and scores with chicks. He's sexy, so sue me. ANYway... Paul develops a relationship with the clan and the wheel of family discourse is set in motion.

Perhaps the thing that impressed me most about this film was the easy yet indefinable family dynamic. I come from a family that many would have trouble categorizing, so I am always pleased to find films with alternative family constructs that actually work. The fact that these two women happen to be lesbians does not define their characters or their relationships within the family. This is not a "Gay" movie, not a "Chick Flick". No, I would call this movie Human. Hilarious, heartbreaking, hopeful.

I left the theater thinking hard about the seeming random associations of my own family. And a few hours later, I called my mom.

THIS WEEK: Le Tigre Doc at OUTFEST!

Hi Ladies,

So sorry I've been M.I.A. again! I've been tied up working at the OUTFEST Film Festival, and I can only assume that you all have been enjoying your fair share of Cherry Bombs and Bears at our fab screenings.

I've definitely caught a few films, but the one I'm most excited for has yet to premiere. "Le Tigre: On Tour". Holy. F*ck. I'm so excited! Le Tigre was certainly a gateway in to feminism for me in the early years. I remember seeing them in concert while I was still in high school and wondering why there were so many girls there... and why they all kind of looked and acted like me. So badass. I've followed Le Tigre closely over the years, and I'm stoked to see this behind-the-scenes doc. These girls always come back in to my life at very specific times, and I'm ready to re-visit them. I hope you guys/gals/ other can all come too!

The screening is going to be this Thursday, July 15th at The Ford Ampitheater. Under the stars, and totally picnic style. Your ticket will also get you in to the after party (Location still TBD) where Johanna will be DJing. Whaaaaaat?!? I'm def not gonna miss it. Here's the Info..

This week I'm gonna check out some of the shows at the Hollywood Fringe Festival!

If you don't know what a Fringe Festival is.. It's essentially an organized 'showcase' for local and underground performance art, visual art, and film. Usually, the artists book their own venues, and lottery for a spot in the festival. Those who are chosen then become part of the festival and publicity therein. I love fringe film festivals, though I've never been to a theater based one. Check out the list below of things that caught my eye, but please peruse the website yourself and see what else there is. TODAY: Marie Jager - The Big Nowhere

So, I love Los Angeles. I love learning about Los Angeles. I despise driving my car. Hence, I'm excited for this exhibit. The François Ghebaly Gallery near Pasadena is exhibiting a collection of Marie Jager's blueprints of Los Angeles. The means by which she develops and alters each of her blueprints are meant to represent the various elements in L.A. living. Sun, smog and Cars. I love it. Here's a little summary of what you'll see...

"In her Pollution Painting series, Marie Jager makes visible the invisible combustion and sediment that defines the city's landscape. Playing off LA's varied reputation for car culture, inevitable sunshine, and smog-induced sunsets, Jager placed canvases in the outdoors and retrieved them a month later as readymade landscape paintings.... In contrast to these durational portraits of the urban environment, the instant of ignition that defines everyday life in Los Angeles—turning over the engine in your car—is captured repeatedly in Jager's Starter paintings where the burnt oil discharged when the motor engages makes an instant oil-on-canvas landscape of the city's mobility and automobile reliant citizenry."

REVIEW Sex And The City 2 - Worst Movie Ever

Now, it's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the Pink Velvet SATC Box Set. I spent my Twentysomethings in New York City watching the four Thirtysomethings bar/ bed hop around my neighborhood week after week. Religiously. With no shame. I wrote countless papers defending the show to some very tough audiences in my Women's Study classes at NYU. I wrote a monthly review in a zine that my roommates published out of our East Village apartment. I LOVED the show. As a young (and rather clueless) woman, I was proud to be part of a generation who publicized our sexuality. The camp, the cheese, the incredibly promiscuous behavior was all part of why we loved the show. It was over the top for sure, but as a young urban woman, I was too.

(I'll leave out my diatribe about how horrific it was to see Carrie end up with Mr. Big at the end of the series.)

Enter... The films...

The first movie was terrible, obviously. But still somehow passable. It was too long, too fragmented, and poorly written. Plus, Jennifer Hudson was in it for some reason, and had to rent fancy handbags. Nice, real subtle. In the end, we (the fans) didn't mind it too much. The film concludes with the same crushing disappointment as the Series Finale - Carrie sells herself out to marry Mr. Dumps-A-Lot, but we'll even let that slide. There was something charming and delightfully horrifying about seeing the "girls" on the big screen. Fine. Whatever...

But why... WHY did they have to make a sequel? And why on God's Green Earth did they have to go to Abu Dhabi? This film was clearly written by someone who has been living under a jewel encrusted rock for the last 10 years, and obviously has no time or intention for accurate research. Watching these four actors doing impressions of the characters we once stood so proudly behind is nauseating. They tramp around the "Middle East" wearing the most god awful and unbelievably offensive get ups. The whole running joke is that women have no voice, and no image in certain cultures. That's the JOKE!? Are you kidding me? These are issues that women throughout the world face and fight every day, and you're gonna film a scene with Samantha waiving condoms around a spice market screaming "I Have Sex!". I was truly horrified by every moment of this film. No wonder the world has such a negative view of American culture. Look at the way we are represented.

My entire opinion of the whole franchise has completely changed. I'm pissed that I stood up for the feminist values in this show for so long, only to have my devotion thrown in my face with this script.

Shame on the jerks at HBO and New Line who released this abomination. Shame on anyone who had "creative" input (I'm looking at you MPK/SJP). Shame on the actors for agreeing to portray these women in such a way. And shame on me for falling for it. I beg of you, do NOT give this movie one dime of your money, or moment of your time.

TONIGHT: Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo

It's here!! The film all us girls (and girl lovers) have been waiting for! Call all your girlfriends and gays, strap on your Manolos, slap some mousse through your gently toussled hair, and buy your tickets! The movie event we've been DYING for.....

"Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo!" Hurray!! (Que Samba Intro Music..)

That's right! Premiering tonight at Downtown Independent, Jessica Orek's "Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo" explores the importance of these sacred insects in Japanese culture. The film plays out like a detective story, tracing the cultural imprint of the beetle through time, and across religions. This is truly a subject I know nothing about, and I'm so excited to see how such a little gross/beautiful creature can help shape a culture and belief system. Here's a little synopsis from the website:

"Using insects like an anthropologist's toolkit, the film uncovers Japanese philosophies that will shift Westerner's perspectives on nature, beauty, life, and even the seemingly mundane realities of their day-to-day routines."

So I beg of you.. If you have $10 to spend on a movie tonight, do NOT spend it on a franchise that tried to convince you to wait around for Mr. Right, no matter how shitty he was to you.* Support local independent female film makers, who have real things to talk about. Like bugs.

*All that being said, I did (and still do) truly love the SATC series. It empowered a generation of young women to take responsibility for their actions between the sheets. I just cannot stand behind the decision to have our heroine compromise all of her beliefs and end up with the man who made her question herself than anything throughout the run of the show. I think the last 10 min. of the first movie negated all of the positive effects of the previous 10 years of Carrie V. Big.

I've been to a couple of their events, and have found them if nothing, inspirational. It's always nice to hear women who are working in the field tell the stories of how they got to where they are. A true Riot Grrrl, Ms. Bonfire Madigan is a bitchin cellist and she's playing tonight at the Bootleg Theater. She's a Kill Rock Stars orig and I'm so stoked to see her live!

Also, if you haven't been to The Bootleg Theater over on the east side, you should definitely check it out. It's a little hole in the wall, and the space is great. They host music, theater, and all kinds of other stuff. There's a little open smoking lounge in the back. It's very cool.

But TONIGHT! We're heading to the Downtown Independent space for a screening of Gary King's "What's Up Lovely". Based on a concept by Jenn Dees and Gary King, WHAT’S UP LOVELY is a drama about the struggle to survive the city while battling the enemy within ourselves. Q&A with these two to follow.

"London-based American artist Daria Martin's 16mm film, "Minotaur" pays tribute to the work of dance pioneer Anna Halprin, whose life and work has had a profound influence on Martin. This film is centered on a Halprin dance based on the sculpture Minotaur by Auguste Rodin from 1886 (also known as Faun and Nymph), a work possessing intensely erotic content (it depicts the part-man/part-bull figure from Greek mythology with a naked young female in its grasp.) For those of you who don't know, Carol Burnett is a pioneer of the female comedian trend in popular culture over the last 40 years. Her sketch comedy show, "The Carol Burnett Show" was the only one of it's kind when it premiered in 1967. The first topical, sketch comedy show helmed by a woman, "The Carol Burnett Show" ran for 11 seasons and won 25 Emmy Awards. Her new book chronicles this chapter in her life.

Hello L.A.dies!

Last night I attended an open house event with the nationwide Women's Philanthropy association called "Step Up Women's Network". I joined Step Up a few months back, and was interested in hearing more about what they offer. I was so pleased with what I heard. They host awesome networking events for professional women in all genres of business, as well as volunteer opportunities with teen girls. I'm excited to get involved, and I encourage you to see what their organization is all about. I'd love to share their mission statement with you. Check 'em out!

German filmmaker Sarah Diehl is visiting LA to participate in The Ethics of Women’s Health conference at USC, and she will present her documentary “Abortion Democracy: Poland/South Africa,” which contrasts the changes in Poland and South Africa regarding abortion laws and their impact on the lives of women, here at EPFC.

Hello All!

The event that I'm most excited for this week is the Diana Thater: Between Science and Magic exhibit at the Santa Monica Museum of Art!

Diana Thater is best known for her work in film and video installations, which she uses brilliantly (I'm sure) in this exhibit centering around the mythology of "Movie Magic".

Her work is a perfect example of media through the female lens. I can't wait to see the exhibit!

The exhibit is open through April 17th.

REVIEW WAM! Media Conference

Hello All!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the WAM! Women, Action and Media Conference event hosted by Santa Monica College, and professor Melanie Klein. I was so impressed by both of the presentations that I saw. I can't wait to share this stuff with you!

The first speaker was a woman named Carla Orendorff. Her work as a local media activist was inspiring and original. She is one of the folks who keeps the great Echo Park Film Center up and running. And for that, we thank her! She gave a great rundown of the Riot Grrrl movement, and made me long for the days of my satin babydoll dresses and ripped fishnets.

If you haven't heard about the Echo Park Film Center (EPFC) check it out for sure! They're a great non-profit film making/ teaching organization based out of Echo Park, CA and they're totally awesome. Tons of great local programs for filmmakers of all ages and backgrounds. They have frequent events that I'm sure we will discuss in the future.

As a great appreciator of the DIY punk scene of the late 90's, I found Carla's discussion of the Grrrl Zine culture very interesting. She introduced us to ZineWiki - an online resource for the zine scene that came to a crashing halt once blogging became 'the thing'. Great reference if you were in to that stuff. I even found an old zine that I once helped publish out of my apartment in Brooklyn on the ZineWiki. Talk about getting the word out!

The second speaker I saw was a great Vid Artist named Anita Sarkeesian. Her website Feminist Frequency is a gallery of her Video Blogs on Feminist Media topics, as well as a portal to the wide world of Video Remixes. I am new to this realm of the digital world, and was thrilled to see what was there. She discussed the concept of taking previously produced media - be it sexist, or otherwise - and re-cutting/ remixing it with intent of changing it's original message. It blew my mind! I can't wait to learn more about Anita, and her work.

Also, please check out Feminist Fatale. The host of yesterday's event was Woman's Studies professor Melanie Klein, and her website kicks ass! Her commentary on the intersection between Feminism and pop culture is fascinating. I found her so inspiring!

WAM! It Yourself Conference 2010

Hello Feministas!

My favorite new find this week is a media justice organization called "WAM! Woman, Action & the Media".

I'm so excited to get involved with WAM! They work to connect media makers and media activists (That's us!) through conferences, workshops, trainings and a global membership program.

I found this organization JUST in time. Their 2010 conference WAM! It Yourself comes to Los Angeles tomorrow, March 25th, 2010!!

The conference will take place in West L.A. and will feature:
- Film screenings followed by Filmmaker Q&A's.
- A discussion on Feminist Activism through media with leaders in the field.
- Workshop on Feminist Activism via blogging/ vlogging (Hurray!)

Hello Las Angelinas!!

If you are anything like me, you've been spending some very valuable time picking through endless social event websites looking for Feminist Media happenings throughout the city. Chances are, you're coming up short. With this blog, I'm hoping to cut your search time in half and spread the word about the great Feminist sub-culture in this City of Angles!

I am constantly on the search for art openings, live performances, and media events of the Feminist persuasion. So, instead of subscribing to every 'Events Around Town' newsletter, I have decided to create my own. This blog will serve as a message board for all such events happening in the greater L.A. area.

I will post an update whenever I find something worth while going on, and I will be reviewing the vents that I am able to attend. That's where i need YOUR help!!
